Siren Tides

You know, there’s something about shows that can go on for years and not have you grow tired of them. Sure, if you see the repeats one too many times it suck for those episodes you know the end of as soon as they start… but still.

I’ve been watching Law & Order longer than I can really remember, the original one, SVU, CI… those are my favourites though SVU ranked high on my list even as a child.

I know, I know. A show about sex crimes isn’t something most kids would watch – but in all honesty but the time I started to care about the shows I had long since known the stories themselves were (for the most part) not based on true stories. I certainly was aware that there were bad people out there, this is something young children and especially young girls are taught.

But on Law & Order things often get set as right as is possible, and they saved a lot of the people that got kidnapped, caught a lot of nasty people… and it was comforting to think of the law like that, even if it was the law of another land.

And sometimes it still makes me cry.  Not necessarily for the atrocities some of the perp characters committed, but the gentle, forgiving nature of some of those who had been wronged toward others.

I guess… hope springs eternal, even if only from fiction.

I’m bored. I feel like talking to by characters, and of course my blog cops the semi amusing result. If you don’t know who someone is, feel free to ask. Yes. I have too many women, get over it.

Angelica, I know you’ve been abused and tortured and had your heart, body and mind basically ripped in two. I know you think Incubi make for interesting pastimes, and that you don’t believe in underwear anymore… but seriously, chickens are harder to get than you. I also know you pretty much mean nobody any harm, except perhaps the new Rex wannabe, because he annoys you, but seriously. Mia should not be allowed near Gerard at all. He will find something to do with her that will make you kick yourself later. Also. You should probably listen to your friends more, they love you.

Mia, honey. Hit your cousin^[i] with a baseball bat for me, please. Don’t give me that look. I know you love her, but she’s wretchedly blindsighted… but I suppose you are, too. What am I going to do with you?

Uhmn, Raina, sweetheart? COME BACK TO ME PLEASE. Moondust is rotting in the wind. Seriously. This isn’t a fun way to have revenge on me for giving you a job at a bakery. It’s not like it’s a bad job, either… I mean yes there are mortals to deal with but that’s what happens when you let yourself get exhiled from Faery. No, that wasn’t my fault. Totally not. Ahem.

Now I know you have issues with distracting those in your Guard, Macha. And I know I happen to have made you after one of the Goddesses in my religion, but seriously. Forgetting/Not making time to have sex for three hundred years and ending up on an island alone with one of the very attrative and capable members of your guard… and then trying to make him feel better, which with the fey seems to almost always consist of at least naked cuddles and often sex and wondering how you let it happen, how you let something possibly distract you both… I mean, seriously, honey! It is plain to see as your hair is red. You like him. You’ll cope. You’re capable enough not to let him distract you when you’re working. Not all men are trash, y’know. Plus, fey sex? Shiney.

Heidi, sweetheart. Go jump off a cliff. It’s not that I don’t love you, but you put me in an exceptionally random mood and since you’re all crazy and prophetic it’s really not that surprising. Also, you’re more murderous than my Battle Goddess… and uh. You know. That’s not a good sign, even for a vamp.

I’m not one for writing reviews. I’ve never been very good at it, I don’t think in a clear and linear manner… which means most people sort of sit there, mouth agape as they listen to me talk. Unless they’re in my family at least… it seems to be a family trait though I got more of it than some.

I’m digressing. I just finished the third book of Richelle Mead’s “Vampire Academy” series. My mum brought them as a part of my birthday present… er. well, that is. She decided that anything with the word “vampire” on it needed to be in my collection and that the books weren’t insanely expensive so she brought them for me and told me they were part of my already passed birthday gifts. She’s a cool Mum sometimes.

I was fully prepared to not like the books the instant I saw what they were about. They didn’t look bad per se – but to be perfectly honest highschool and I didn’t get along with to start with let alone throwing in a bunch of vampires and dhampir’s that weren’t what I knew was traditionally accepted as “proper” for their kind. If there had been werewolves I might have thought another Twilight was on the loose, to be honest. I decided to read them after mum constantly asking me if I liked the books, I had planned on getting around to them eventually but despite my fast reading rate I have a stack of books the size of Mount Olympus that I haven’t gotten around to reading yet.

So I sat down and started on the first one, Vampire Academy and read through it in a day. At first I was more or less indifferent to the characters – jarred by the difference in the vampires if nothing else. Theres two kinds of vampires in Mead’s Vampire Academy universe – the main ones in the books are called Moroi and they’re alive. One of the main characters, Lissa happens to be one of those but the main character is Rose – A dhampir and Lissa’s to-be guardian. Sort of like a body guard for life, really. I’m not going to go into details about what happens in the books, they’re enrapturing if you can set aside previous thoughts of what vampires are… which for a big vampire junky like me was a little hard to do… but I was won before the book ended.

The second book I was more willing to read, devouring the story quickly as I could – Frostbite still had me a little jarred and being that I read so many books… well I’d be lying if I said I had no idea how it was going to end. But I still felt Rose’s pain when it did end. The thing about these books is that the main character, Rosemary Hathaway is real. I don’t mean that she’s real in the sense of you and I being real… but she is real in her way. Anyone who reads or writes enough will know what I mean. She has emotions that don’t always make sense, she isn’t perfect despite… or perhaps because of good intentions or her occasional lack-there-of. You can feel her pain, her distress, her sense of duty to protect the Moroi and her best friend. You can feel her love and dispair in book three, Shadow Kiss.

In short, they’re worth the read and I can’t wait for the fouth… though I’m not sure I can bare to find out what happens at the same time I know I want too. Her writing is like chocolate.
